Medium-size format for two actors, masks and sixteen
different-technique puppets, most of which are string puppets. SYNOPSIS In the middle ages, two simple Catalan weavers and tailors are forced to emigrate. After a long journey, they eventually make some “very special" clothes for a pretentious Emperor from a distant country. These clothes can only be seen by the most well-placed and intelligent people and are therefore invisible to the eyes of the bad and foolish.
CONTENTS We wanted to add the idea of emigration (or immigration, depending on perspective), with all the factors involved therein, to the moral of Andersen’s tale referring to the emperor’s vanity and pretension and deceitful appearances. We therefore changed the character of the protagonists. In all the versions consulted, they appear as simple crooks and scoundrels, but here they are two local weavers and tailors who, because of the poverty suffered at the time by the less well-to–do classes, craftsmen included, are forced to seek work abroad. With laughter, we thus wish to reflect a little on the time when we ourselves were the emigrants. In short, we want the audience to get into the emigrant’s skin and reflect on why people have to leave their homes, abandon their families, possessions and homeland to experience a great number of vicissitudes in unfamiliar places where they do not know what type of reception they will be given.
